A >> S&P 500 Futures refers to the electronically traded futures contracts on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) that are underlying based on S&P 500 Index.
The S&P 500 Index is the best known of the many indices owned and maintained by Standard & Poor’s.
A >> S&P 500 refers not only to the index but also to the 500 companies that have their common stocks included in the index itself.
The stocks included in the S&P 500 are those of large publicly held companies that trade on either of the two largest American stock market companies i.e. the NYSE and the NASDAQ.
Companies within the S&P 500 index include such notable leaders as Apple, Microsoft, Exxon, Procter & Gamble, General Electric, Bank of America and other business giants.
A >> Trading of the S&P Futures starts on Sunday at 5:00pm (CST) and closes on Friday at 3:15pm (CST).
S&P futures are traded almost 24 hours during weekdays.
However there is short break every day between 3:15pm (CST) and 3:30pm (CST).
Trade is broken into two sessions, the Day session and the After-hours session:
1. Day session trading starts at 8:30am (CST) and closes at 3:15pm (CST).
2. After-hours trading starts at 3:30pm (CST) and continues until the open of the next Day session.
A >> There are many contracts of S&P Futures that represent a portion of the normal futures contracts
For example, the E-mini S&P 500 Futures contract is one-fifth the size of the standard S&P Futures contract.
A >> The Micro Emini S&P futures contract is the same as the ‘regular’ S&P 500 Emini contract but it is 1/10th the size.
Each 1 point move in the S&P 500 index is worth US$5 per Micro Emini contract, compared to US$50 for the Emini (ES).
The margin to trade a Micro Emini S&P contract is also 1/10th the size.
A >> Emini S&P futures are the perfect day trading vehicle.
They have a number of advantages for both day traders and longer term traders:
Equally easy to go Long or Short: You either buy or sell the current Emini contract and there is no up-tick rule.
If you traded the SPY ETF you would have to buy or sell different ETFs (Long: SPY or leveraged SSO; Short: SH or leveraged SDS).
24-Hour trading makes the Emini attractive to traders around the world. Overnight moves in related equity markets, like the DAX or FTSE, can be played with the one trading vehicle.
